Another day, another paedophile avoiding prison. Today it is the turn of Huw Edwards, the latest BBC nonce extraordinaire, who has walked free despite admitting to offences of possessing some utterly depraved images of children being sexually abused. That his “reputation is in tatters” is apparently punishment enough in the eyes of Paul Goldspring, the Magistrate who sentenced the disgraced news reader, and who saw fit to suspend the six-month prison sentence handed to Edwards. Perhaps Mr Goldspring’s own digital communications warrant some investigation. Decent people, those without any paedophilic tendencies, see these offences as absolutely heinous, and worthy of punishment far more severe than a suspended sentence. However, the trend for zero prison time for these grotesque individuals is growing.
In August this year, Matthew Wood was convicted for possession of a “vast trove” of child sexual abuse material, much of which was classified as category A (the most serious), including some showing the sexual abuse of newborn babies, as well as bestiality. He exchanged vile messages with others in his network, even purporting his desire to “rape all the subjects”. Despite acknowledging the “extreme” nature of 30-year-old Wood’s offences, Judge Paul Thomas KC suspended a two-year prison sentence, branding him a “sad man with sad fantasies”, as if he had been caught with no more than a copy of Readers’ Wives.
Hull man Neil Smith, 49, had his two-year sentence suspended by Judge John Thackray KC, after being convicted for possession of his own collection of disgusting child sexual abuse images, which included many classed as category A. This pillar of the community had also made films of himself masturbating while watching the category A stuff in his possession. But zero prison time was deemed suitable for Mr Smith.
Perverted paedophile pensioner, Cyril Moan, 78, from Co. Down, was convicted of downloading thousands of depraved images of child sexual abuse. Exhibiting a high level of commitment to his filthy hobby, this “polite” man had spent considerable time and effort to catalogue his sick collection, which included hundreds of category A images. And yet, Judge Geoffrey Miller KC suspended a 10-month sentence handed down to Moan. No jail for him, either.
In Nottingham, a 44-year-old Scout Leader and father, Jonathan Craven, pleaded guilty to possession of, as with his peers above, the most serious category A images, involving children as young as three being raped and abused, as well as sexual abuse of dogs. The judge in this case, Recorder Stuart Sprawson, lamented the end of Craven’s marriage, saying he was “disappointed to hear your [Craven’s] marriage has come to an end as a consequence of this”. Perhaps Sprawson feels a wife should forgive such behaviour. Perhaps it was Sprawson’s clear sympathy for Craven that led him to hand down a measly 12-month sentence, and then to suspend that paltry term. No jail for Craven.
Former Labour councillor for Bridge of Allan and Dunblane, Ewan Dillon, also possessed a stash of images on a mobile phone, many category A, of young girls between the ages of five and ten being raped. Sheriff Keith O'Mahony, sentencing 21-year-old Dillon, decided that a community sentence of 270 hours unpaid work, was punishment enough for this utter disgrace of a human being.
So, you see the pattern emerging. All the cases cited here were convictions within just a two-month period, August – September this year. I could not bear to look further; my stomach could not take it. Judges the length and breadth of the UK are apparently in concordance with the idea that viewing vile, depraved images of children being raped is akin to dropping litter. This relaxed attitude to such a heinous crime is feeding a wider problem in society, that is a creeping acceptance of the sexualisation of our children, and it must be stopped. Yet instead, the lenience doled out fuels the daring of these sick individuals, emboldening them to continue with their disgusting crimes.
By handing Huw Edwards such a light sentence, the judge has shamelessly admitted to the world that protection of children is not a priority in the UK. Allowing these depraved men to blame mental health issues for their shocking crimes is tantamount to saying “fuck you” to the kids whose lives are being destroyed. These images are made to satisfy the disgusting, perverted lust of these men, and their viewing of them is creating a demand for which there appears to be an endless supply. And yet the judges in all these cases are so concerned with the “mental health” and the damage to these individuals’ reputations, that no thought at all is given to the victims of their crimes.
It is worth mentioning, too, that the relative ease with which these men are presumably able to access child sexual abuse material leads to the obvious conclusion that the much-trumpeted “Online Safety Bill” is already completely unfit for purpose. But then, we “far right extremists” always knew that the Bill was never truly concerned with real online safety, the kind where children are protected against sexual abuse, and from the proliferation of images of said abuse being shared online. Apparently, that does not fit the definition of “online safety”. What does, though, is protecting people from hurt feelings. And so, what the Bill will be used for is to censor those with unacceptable opinions. Like that men can’t be women. Or that children should not have their puberties blocked. Or that lockdowns kill and Matt Hancock murdered thousands of elderly people. You know, really extreme views like that.
I am sick of saying this, but the world really has gone mad. Cause hurty feelings by posting a meme online: Jail. Watch children being abused and wank over it repeatedly: No jail. I hope there is a special place in hell for these monsters, and the judges who suspiciously see fit to protect them.
